Minnesota Governor Election: AP Calls Race for Klobuchar, the State's First Woman Governor
The Associated Press called Minnesota's governor's race on the evening of November 3 for Democratic U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar, who defeated Republican candidate and state House Speaker Lisa Demuth to become the first woman elected governor in Minnesota history. Minnesota is in the upper Midwest of the United States, and its capital is Saint Paul.
The AP results page snapshot showed 3,960 of the state's 4,105 precincts reporting, about 96.47 percent, with an estimated 95.83 percent of the vote counted; Klobuchar had 1,548,290 votes to Demuth's 1,180,351.
Klobuchar has represented Minnesota in the U.S. Senate since 2006 and ran to succeed Governor Tim Walz, who did not seek a third term; Demuth won the Republican nomination after defeating Mike Lindell, who had President Donald Trump's endorsement, in the primary. Either winner would have become Minnesota's first woman governor. After Klobuchar takes office as governor, her Senate seat will be handled under state law: the governor will appoint a temporary replacement, and a special election will be held in November 2027. Results are unofficial until state canvassing and certification are complete.
