Minnesota Senate Election: AP Calls Race for Flanagan, the First Native American Woman Elected to the U.S. Senate

The Associated Press called Minnesota's U.S. Senate race in the early hours of November 4 for Democrat Peggy Flanagan, who defeated Republican candidate Michele Tafoya to succeed retiring Senator Tina Smith. Minnesota is in the upper Midwest of the United States, and its capital is Saint Paul.
The AP results page snapshot showed 3,960 of the state's 4,105 precincts reporting, about 96.47 percent, with an estimated 95.84 percent of the vote counted; Flanagan had 1,500,379 votes to Tafoya's 1,206,908. The AP declared Flanagan the winner at 12:07 a.m. Eastern on November 4. Tafoya conceded on election night and called Flanagan to congratulate her.
Flanagan is Minnesota's lieutenant governor, serving alongside Governor Tim Walz since 2019, and is a citizen of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe. Her victory makes her the first Native American woman elected to the U.S. Senate. The seat stays in Democratic hands, and Minnesota has not elected a Republican to the U.S. Senate since 2002. Results are unofficial until state canvassing and certification are complete.
