Washington Post: Bessent Asked China to Use Its Influence With Iran to Help End the War; Beijing Relayed the Message to Tehran

WASHINGTON — Washington Post columnist David Ignatius reported on November 6 that U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, with President Donald Trump's backing, had asked China to use its influence with Iran to help end the war between the United States and Iran. A knowledgeable U.S. official told the newspaper that Beijing had delivered Washington's appeal to Tehran.
According to the report, Trump had already asked Chinese President Xi Jinping for help on Iran when the two leaders met in September, and the issue is expected to come up again when they meet later this month. The report also noted that Vice President JD Vance is leading a parallel diplomatic effort with Iran and sent a letter last month to Iranian security chief Mohsen Rezaei.
Neither Washington nor Beijing has publicly confirmed the request, and Iran has made no public statement responding to it or accepting any negotiating arrangement. The outreach is not itself a ceasefire or a peace agreement, and the report set out no terms or timetable.
