Montana Senate Election: AP Calls Race for Alme, Holding Open Republican Seat

The Associated Press has called Montana's U.S. Senate race for Republican candidate Kurt Alme, who defeated independent candidate Seth Bodnar and Democratic candidate Alani Bankhead. Montana is in the northern Rocky Mountain region, its capital is Helena, and the Senate seat was open because Senator Steve Daines did not seek re-election.
The AP results page snapshot (Race 27607) showed 572 of the state's 732 precincts reporting, about 78.14 percent, with an estimated 78.23 percent of the vote counted; Alme had 187,961 votes, Bodnar 152,203 and Bankhead 46,838, about 48.6 percent, 39.3 percent and 12.1 percent respectively. The AP had listed the race as too early to call for much of election night before declaring Alme the winner as counting advanced.
Alme is a former U.S. Attorney for the District of Montana; after Daines withdrew from the race earlier this year, he endorsed Alme as his successor, and Alme won the Republican nomination with about 76 percent of the primary vote. Bodnar, a former University of Montana president and retired Green Beret, ran as an independent with backing from former Democratic senator Jon Tester; Bankhead, an Air Force officer, won the Democratic nomination with about 43.7 percent.
Republicans hold the seat; the AP had previously declared that Democrats won control of the Senate, and this result does not change the majority. Results are unofficial until canvassing and certification by the secretary of state's office.
