Nevada Governor Election: AP Calls Race for Ford Over Incumbent Lombardo, Set to Become the State's First Black Governor

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · States · GSM News

The race for governor of Nevada has been called. According to the Associated Press, Democratic Attorney General Aaron Ford defeated Republican Governor Joe Lombardo to win election as governor of Nevada. The election was held on November 3, and the AP called the race for Ford after about 84.89 percent of precincts had reported; Ford will become Nevada's first Black governor.

Under the AP vote count, Ford received 491,891 votes to Lombardo's 423,205, with nonpartisan candidate Danielle Ford receiving 25,900. Precincts reporting stood at 84.89 percent, with an estimated 84.92 percent of the vote counted. The AP call is a projection; official results remain subject to certification by the Nevada Secretary of State.

Ford, 54, has served as Nevada's attorney general since 2019 and previously served as state Senate majority leader; he was the state's first Black attorney general and first Black Senate majority leader. The AP noted that Ford will also be the first Black governor of a state west of the Mississippi River. Lombardo, 63, was elected governor in 2022 after serving as sheriff of Clark County and was endorsed by President Trump.

During the campaign, Ford blamed the state's economic woes on Lombardo and Trump, including some of the highest gas prices in the country at over $5 per gallon and declining tourism, and pledged to revive bills Lombardo had killed with record-breaking vetoes, including limiting how many homes large corporations can buy and giving the state power to adopt Medicaid negotiated prescription drug prices. Lombardo campaigned on his first-term record, including pay raises for teachers and state employees and $133 million set aside to develop housing for middle-income Nevadans.

Nevada was one of the most closely watched battleground states of this midterm cycle, and its governor's race was considered among the most competitive in the country. With Ford's win, Democrats will hold the Nevada governor's office for the first time since Lombardo defeated then-Governor Steve Sisolak in 2022. (Source: Associated Press)
