Midterms: NBC and Decision Desk HQ Project Democrats Retake Senate Control

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · Federal · GSM News

On the night of the November 3 U.S. midterm elections, NBC News and the election-data outlet Decision Desk HQ projected that Democrats will win a majority in the U.S. Senate, retaking control of the chamber from Republicans. Combined with the House of Representatives, which had been projected for Democrats earlier in the evening, Democrats are now projected to control both chambers of Congress, USA Today reported Tuesday night.

One-third of the Senate was on the ballot, with 51 seats needed for a majority. Republicans had held the chamber 53-47, and Democrats needed a net gain of four seats to flip it. Democrats recorded six flips during the night: the Associated Press called South Carolina for Annie Andrews over incumbent Sen. Darline Graham, North Carolina's open seat for Roy Cooper, Texas for James Talarico, Ohio's special election for Sherrod Brown, and Iowa for Josh Turek, while Adam Hamilton was projected to win in Kansas, becoming the state's first Democratic U.S. senator since 1932.

As of publication, the Associated Press had not yet formally called overall control of the Senate; its calls covered the individual state races above. A small number of seats, including Michigan, remained uncalled, counting was continuing, and the final margins in both chambers were still to be determined.

The Senate confirms Cabinet and federal judicial nominees, so the change in control will directly shape the Trump administration's personnel and legislative agenda for the remainder of the term. The new Congress is scheduled to convene in January 2027. Counting is still developing, and GSM will continue to follow the results.
