Maine Senate Race: Collins Concedes to Jackson, Ending a 30-Year Senate Career

The U.S. Senate race in Maine took a decisive turn late on November 3 as Republican incumbent Sen. Susan Collins conceded to Democratic challenger Troy Jackson. According to Reuters, Collins conceded on Tuesday night, giving Democrats a major pickup in one of the most competitive races of the midterms. The Maine State House is in Augusta.
In a statement, Collins said: "It has been the honor of my life to serve the people of Maine in the United States Senate. I'm proud of all I have been able to accomplish for our state and for our country in the past 30 years. I called Troy Jackson tonight to congratulate him and to assure him that my staff and I will work to ensure a smooth transition."
In the Associated Press count at the time of the concession, Jackson led Collins by 275,873 votes to 249,988, with 62.42 percent of precincts reporting and an estimated 69.16 percent of the vote counted; the AP had not yet called the race, while CNN and the Fox News Decision Desk had projected Jackson the winner. Counting is continuing, and results are subject to certification.
Collins was first elected to the Senate in 1996 and was reelected five times as a moderate Republican, seeking a sixth term this year. Jackson, 58, is a former president of the Maine Senate and a fifth-generation logger from Allagash; he first ran for governor this year, finishing third in the June Democratic primary, before Democrats selected him in July to replace Graham Platner, who had dropped out of the Senate race.
