Texas Election Results: Democrats Win Governor's Race and First Statewide Offices Since 1994

Here is the full list of Texas results from the 2026 midterm elections. Democratic candidate Gina Hinojosa was elected governor, defeating incumbent Governor Greg Abbott, who was seeking a fourth term; Democrat James Talarico won the U.S. Senate race. Democrats won Texas statewide offices for the first time since 1994 and prevailed across this year's statewide executive contests. More than 7.7 million Texans voted early, 40.5% of registered voters, breaking the early-voting record from the 2018 midterms. The statewide list follows.
Governor and U.S. Senator
Governor: Gina Hinojosa (Democrat) received 5,230,908 votes, about 52.8%, and the Associated Press has called the race for her. Incumbent Governor Greg Abbott (Republican) received 4,524,948 votes, about 45.7%, and conceded on election night; Libertarian candidate Pat Dixon received about 1.5%. Hinojosa will become Texas's first Latino governor and its first Democratic governor since Ann Richards left office in 1995.
U.S. Senator: James Talarico (Democrat) won. According to the Texas Secretary of State's unofficial count, Talarico received 5,410,057 votes (55.0%) to Republican Ken Paxton's 4,228,924 (43.0%), and the AP has called the race for Talarico. He is the first Texas Democrat elected to the U.S. Senate since Lloyd Bentsen in 1988. The seat's incumbent, John Cornyn, lost the Republican primary runoff in May and did not reach the general election.
Other Statewide Offices
Lieutenant Governor: Vikki Goodwin (Democrat) defeated incumbent Dan Patrick (Republican), 51.7% to 45.7%; the AP has called the race.
Attorney General: Nathan Johnson (Democrat) defeated Mayes Middleton (Republican), 52.3% to 46.0%; the AP has called the race.
Railroad Commissioner: Jon Rosenthal (Democrat) defeated Bo French (Republican), 52.5% to 45.6%; the AP has called the race.
Reuters has called the following three races for the Democratic candidates: Comptroller — Sarah Eckhardt (Democrat) defeated incumbent Don Huffines (Republican), 51.3% to 46.2%.
Commissioner of the General Land Office — Benjamin Flores (Democrat) defeated incumbent Dawn Buckingham (Republican), 51.4% to 47.0%. Commissioner of Agriculture — Clayton Tucker (Democrat) defeated Nate Sheets (Republican), 51.3% to 46.7%. With these calls, Democrats swept all six statewide offices on this year's ballot: lieutenant governor, attorney general, comptroller, land commissioner, agriculture commissioner and railroad commissioner.
The Texas secretary of state is appointed by the governor rather than elected, so there was no election for that office this year.
Ballot Questions
There were no statewide constitutional amendments or referendums on this year's Texas ballot. Texas constitutional amendments were last put to a statewide vote as 17 measures in November 2025. Local propositions in cities, counties and school districts are not statewide measures and are not included in this list.
U.S. House
Texas has 38 seats in the U.S. House. The AP has called 32 seats, with 6 not yet called. Combining called seats with the leaders in uncalled races, Republicans hold 24 seats (18 called) and Democrats 14 (all called). Before the election the delegation stood at 25 Republicans and 13 Democrats, so Democrats would gain one seat if the current leads hold.
Two called seats flipped: in District 15, Bobby Pulido (Democrat) defeated incumbent Monica De La Cruz (Republican); in District 23, Katy Padilla Stout (Democrat) won an open seat previously held by Republicans.
Among the uncalled seats, Republican Jace Yarbrough leads Democrat Dan Barrios in the open District 32, 142,834 votes to 134,781; that seat was previously held by Democrats. Districts 2, 5, 22, 27 and 38 are also uncalled, with Republican candidates leading in each.
There are no Chinese American or Asian American winners in this year's Texas U.S. House delegation.
State Legislature
The state Senate remains under Republican control, 19 seats to the Democrats' 12, unchanged from before the election.
Control of the state House is not yet decided. In the Secretary of State's unofficial count, Democrats lead in 84 of 150 districts and Republicans in 66, with Democrats leading in 22 districts previously held by Republicans. If those leads hold, Democrats would control the Texas House for the first time since 2003, but as of now this can only be recorded as a lead, not a settled result.
Among Chinese American state legislators: State Rep. Gene Wu (Democrat) of Houston's District 137 leads Republican opponent Helen Zhou by about 71% to 29%; the AP has not yet called that race. In District 112, Republican incumbent State Rep. Angie Chen Button currently trails Democratic challenger Zach Herbert; that race is also uncalled.
Counting and Certification
These results are the collective choices of Texas voters. The figures above come from the Texas Secretary of State's semi-official (unofficial) count and Associated Press race calls. Mail ballots are still being counted; races not yet called are listed by their current leaders only, and final results are subject to official certification.
