Montana 2026 Election Results: Alme Elected Senator, 1st District House Race Still Uncalled

Montana voted in the 2026 midterm elections on November 3, and the results below are the collective choice of the state's voters. According to the Montana Secretary of State's count and Associated Press race calls, Kurt Alme was elected to the U.S. Senate, all three statewide questions passed, the 2nd U.S. House District stayed Republican, and the 1st District remains uncalled. There was no governor's race and no state constitutional executive office on the ballot this year. The full list follows.
Governor and U.S. Senator
Governor: no race this year (this section is retained and noted for completeness). Gov. Greg Gianforte (R) was reelected in 2024 and serves until the end of 2028; the office is next contested in 2028.
U.S. Senator: Kurt Alme (R), 223,428 votes, 48.8%, elected, succeeding Sen. Steve Daines (R), who did not seek reelection — a Republican hold. The AP called the race at about 12:54 a.m. MT on November 4.
U.S. Senate, other candidates: Seth Bodnar (unaffiliated), 171,327 votes, 37.4%; Alani Bankhead (D), 54,982 votes, 12.0%; Kyle Austin (Libertarian), 8,397 votes, 1.8%. The state's other senator, Tim Sheehy (R), was not up this year; his seat is next contested in 2030.
Other Statewide Offices
No state constitutional executive offices (lieutenant governor, secretary of state, attorney general, state auditor, superintendent of public instruction) were contested this year; they run on the presidential cycle and are next contested in 2028 (this section is retained and noted for completeness).
State Supreme Court Justice #4 (nonpartisan): Amy Eddy (nonpartisan), elected, succeeding retiring Justice Beth Baker. Called by the AP; her vote share will be added from the Secretary of State's official count.
Public Service Commission Districts 1 and 5 were contested this year; the winners and vote shares were not found and are not filled in by conjecture, pending the official count.
Ballot Questions
CI-132 (nonpartisan judicial elections amendment): would write into the state constitution that judicial elections must remain nonpartisan. Passed: Yes 306,628 votes, 68.0%, to 144,060 No. Called by the AP.
CI-133 (initiative and referendum rights amendment): would write the people's initiative and referendum rights into the constitution, requiring petition approval, signature verification and legal challenge procedures to be fair and timely and barring disqualification of petitions over technicalities. Passed: Yes 287,930 votes, 65.1%, to 154,053 No. Called by the AP.
I-194 (the "Montana Plan"): would limit the powers of "artificial persons" (including corporations, nonprofits, partnerships and trade associations), barring them from giving money or anything of value to candidate elections, parties or measures. The measure began as a constitutional initiative and was converted to a statutory initiative by a January 2026 state supreme court ruling; if enacted it enters state law effective January 1, 2027. Passed: Yes 286,709 votes, 65.3%, to 152,137 No. Called by the AP.
U.S. House
Overview: the state has 2 seats, held before the election by Republicans, 2-0.
District 1: not yet called. Leader Sam Forstag (D) has 119,434 votes, 49.9%, to Aaron Flint (R) with 113,022 votes, 47.2%; Nick Sheedy (Libertarian) took 6,819 votes. The seat was Republican before (incumbent Ryan Zinke retired); if the lead holds it would be a flip, but the AP has not called the race, so only the lead is reported (another data outlet has called it differently; under source discipline the AP status governs).
District 2: Troy Downing (R), 126,740 votes, 58.2%, reelected. His opponents were Brian Miller (D), 70,161 votes; Michael Eisenhauer (unaffiliated), 17,003 votes; and Patrick McCracken (Libertarian), 3,975 votes. Called by the AP.
Provisional makeup: Republicans have at least one seat called, with District 1 undecided. No Chinese American or Asian American winner was found among the two districts' winners or leaders.
State Legislature
State Senate: 50 seats, 25 up this year. Republicans kept their majority (from 32 seats before the election) with no flip of control; final seat numbers will be added when counting finishes.
State House: 100 seats, all up this year. From 58-42 Republican before the election, control had not been formally called at snapshot time; the provisional reading is that Republicans lead to retain their majority with no flip signal, pending completed counts.
In sum, Republicans controlled both chambers before the election; the Senate is confirmed held, the House awaits a call, and no flip is indicated so far.
Counting and Certification
The Secretary of State's results page was still updating on November 4 (502 of 728 precincts fully counted, the rest partially). Figures are from the Secretary of State's count and AP calls, pending the state canvass and certification; uncalled races are listed with their current leaders only, and final results are subject to official certification. GSM will update this list as the remaining races are called.
