North Dakota 2026 Election Results: Fedorchak Reelected to House, Free School Meals Amendment Uncalled

Wednesday, November 4, 2026 · States · GSM News

North Dakota voted in the 2026 midterm elections on November 3, and the results below are the collective choice of the state's voters. According to the North Dakota Secretary of State's count and Associated Press race calls, there was no governor's race and no U.S. Senate race this year; Republicans won the other statewide offices, Julie Fedorchak was reelected to the U.S. House, and of two constitutional measures one was rejected while the other remains uncalled. The full list follows.

Governor and U.S. Senator

Governor: no race this year (this section is retained and noted for completeness). Gov. Kelly Armstrong (R) was elected in 2024; the office is next contested in 2028.

U.S. Senator: no race this year (this section is retained and noted for completeness). Sen. John Hoeven (R) serves until 2028 and Sen. Kevin Cramer (R) until 2030.

Other Statewide Offices

Secretary of State: Michael Howe (R), 144,033 votes, 62.1%, elected, defeating Ryan Braunberger (D-NPL), 87,963 votes. Called by the AP.

Attorney General: Drew Wrigley (R), elected.

Agriculture Commissioner: Doug Goehring (R), elected.

Tax Commissioner: Brian Kroshus (R), elected.

Public Service Commissioner (full-term seat): Sheri Haugen-Hoffart (R), elected.

Public Service Commissioner (unexpired two-year seat): Jill Kringstad (R), elected for the first time to a two-year term; the seat is contested for a full term in 2028.

Superintendent of Public Instruction (nonpartisan office): Levi Bachmeier, elected to a two-year term; the office is contested for a full term in 2028.

Note: except for secretary of state, individual vote totals and percentages for this section were not obtained in detail; winners only are listed, pending the Secretary of State's official tally. Governor, lieutenant governor and treasurer were not on this year's ballot.

Ballot Questions

Constitutional Measure 1 (raise the amendment threshold to 60%): would raise the passage threshold for future state constitutional amendments from a simple majority to 60% (referred by the legislature). Rejected: Yes 101,659 votes, 43.5%, to No 131,947. Called by the AP.

Constitutional Measure 2 (free school meals amendment): would amend the constitution to require public schools to provide free breakfast and lunch to K-12 students, reimbursed by the state (citizen-initiated). Not yet called: No leads with 119,152 votes over Yes with 116,263 votes, 49.4% — a margin of about 2,900 votes (the Secretary of State's complete unofficial count puts No at about 50.6%). Only the lead is reported; it is not recorded as rejected.

U.S. House

Overview: the state has one seat (a single at-large district), held before and after the election by Republicans, with no flip.

At-Large District: Julie Fedorchak (R), 134,477 votes, 57.4%, reelected. The AP called the race at 8:56 p.m. on election night.

At-Large District, other candidates: Trygve Hammer (D-NPL), 85,892 votes; Charles Tuttle (independent), 9,282 votes; Helene Neville (independent), 4,604 votes.

Chinese American / Asian American winners: none; no Chinese American or Asian American winner was found among this seat's candidates.

State Legislature

State Senate: 47 seats. Republicans kept control and their supermajority, with no flip; the pre-election split was Republicans 42, Democrats 5, and exact post-election seats await certification.

State House: 94 seats. Republicans kept control and their supermajority, with no flip; the pre-election split was Republicans 83, Democrats 11, and exact post-election seats await certification.

In sum, 75 of the legislature's 141 seats were contested this year; Democrats gained modestly around Fargo and Grand Forks and two Republican incumbents lost, without changing control of either chamber.

Counting and Certification

The Secretary of State reported 239,057 ballots cast on election night, a turnout of 39.8% — the state's lowest for a general election in nearly 50 years. Figures are from the Secretary of State's unofficial count and AP calls; county canvasses are set for November 16 and the state canvass certifies the results on November 18. Uncalled races are listed with their current leaders only, and final results are subject to official certification. GSM will update this list as the remaining races are called.
