New Mexico 2026 Election Results: Haaland Elected Governor as Democrats Sweep Statewide Offices

Wednesday, November 4, 2026 · States · GSM News

New Mexico voted in the 2026 midterm elections on November 3, and the results below are the collective choice of the state's voters. According to the New Mexico Secretary of State's unofficial count and Associated Press race calls, Deb Haaland was elected governor, Sen. Ben Ray Luján was reelected, Democrats won all five other statewide offices, all seven statewide questions (four constitutional amendments and three bond questions) passed, and all three U.S. House incumbents were reelected. The full list follows.

Governor and U.S. Senator

Governor: Deb Haaland (D), 412,834 votes, 57.2%, elected; her running mate Stephanie Garcia Richard was elected lieutenant governor on the same ticket. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) did not run after two terms, so the seat was open with no party flip. Haaland will be the first Native American woman governor in U.S. history. Called by the AP.

Governor, other candidates: Greggory Hull (R), 308,315 votes, 42.8%; his running mate was David Gallegos.

U.S. Senator: Ben Ray Luján (D), 455,165 votes, 63.2%, reelected. Called by the AP.

U.S. Senate, other candidates: Larry Marker (R), 265,557 votes, 36.8%. The state's other senator, Martin Heinrich (D), was not up this year; his seat is next contested in 2030.

Other Statewide Offices

Secretary of State: Amanda López Askin (D), 433,163 votes, 60.8%, elected.

Attorney General: Raúl Torrez (D), 450,371 votes, 62.9%, elected.

State Auditor: Joseph Maestas (D), 427,943 votes, 60.4%, elected.

State Treasurer: Laura Montoya (D), 423,445 votes, 59.7%, elected.

Commissioner of Public Lands: Juan de Jesus Sanchez III (D), 430,427 votes, 60.6%, elected.

Note: vote figures in this section are from the Secretary of State's unofficial count; the AP has not separately confirmed each call, and figures will be finalized at certification.

Ballot Questions

Amendment 1 (bill disposition): a bill passed by the legislature and not acted on by the governor becomes law, ending the "pocket veto," and a governor's veto must include a veto message. Passed: Yes 494,437 votes, 75.1%, to 164,368 No. Called by the AP.

Amendment 2 (school elections): removes the requirement that school elections be held separately from partisan elections and allows them to coincide. Passed: Yes 423,872 votes, 64.8%, to 230,295 No. Called by the AP.

Amendment 3 (university regent nominating committee): creates a nominating committee from whose list the governor must appoint a majority of university board of regents members. Passed: Yes 441,916 votes, 69.9%, to 190,138 No. Called by the AP.

Amendment 4 (legislator pay): allows state legislators to be paid, capped at the state median household income. Passed: Yes 415,498 votes, 63.4%, to 239,681 No. Called by the AP.

Bond Question 1 (senior facilities, about $21.58 million): borrowing for improvements, construction and equipment at senior facilities. Passed: Yes 450,605 votes, 69.6%, to 196,962 No. Called by the AP.

Bond Question 2 (libraries, about $19.32 million): borrowing for resources at academic, public school, public and tribal libraries. Passed: Yes 424,393 votes, 65.9%, to 219,373 No. Called by the AP.

Bond Question 3 (higher education, about $352 million): borrowing for capital spending at higher education, special and tribal schools. Passed: Yes 412,945 votes, 64.2%, to 229,874 No. Called by the AP.

U.S. House

Overview: the state has 3 seats, held before and after the election by Democrats, 3-0, with no flips.

District 1: Melanie Stansbury (D), 178,261 votes, 63.5%, reelected. Her opponent Ndidiamaka Okpareke (R) took 102,301 votes. Called by the AP.

District 2: Gabe Vasquez (D), 123,113 votes, 58.7%, reelected. His opponent Greg Cunningham (R) took 86,650 votes, 41.3%. Called by the AP.

District 3: Teresa Leger Fernandez (D), 139,967 votes, 61.5%, reelected. Her opponent Martin Zamora (R) took 87,653 votes. Called by the AP.

Chinese American / Asian American winners: none among the three winners.

State Legislature

State House: 70 seats, all up this year. Democrats kept control with no flip; from 44-26 before the election, the provisional count is at least 46 Democrats, 23 Republicans and one seat uncalled. A separate tally from the Secretary of State's count put Democrats at 47 seats (the two-thirds threshold); both readings are noted, this list uses the AP tally provisionally, and whether a supermajority exists awaits seat-by-seat certification.

State Senate: 42 seats, none up this year (four-year terms, next contested in 2028); Democrats hold control 26-16, no flip.

In sum, Democrats held both chambers before and after the election, and with a Democratic hold for governor the party keeps its trifecta.

Counting and Certification

Figures are from the Secretary of State's unofficial count (about 98% of the expected vote) and AP calls as of the morning of November 4; about 726,684 people voted statewide (roughly half of eligible voters, an unofficial figure). The State Canvassing Board is set to certify the results on November 24, 2026. Uncalled races are listed with their current leaders only, and final results are subject to official certification. GSM will update this list as the remaining races are called.
