Indiana 2026 Election Results: Secretary of State Flips Democratic at 51.8%, House District 5 Flips

Governor and U.S. Senator
Indiana voted in the 2026 midterm elections on November 3. The results below are the collective choice of the state's voters. According to the Indiana Secretary of State's official count and Associated Press race calls, there was no governor's or U.S. Senate race this year. Democrat Beau Bayh was elected secretary of state with 51.8% — the first statewide elected office won by an Indiana Democrat since 2012. The treasurer's and comptroller's races have not been called and are listed with their leaders only. Both constitutional ballot questions passed. All nine U.S. House seats have been called, with Democrats gaining one by flipping District 5, and while Republicans kept the state House, their 14-year supermajority there was broken.
Governor: no election this year. Gov. Mike Braun (R), elected in 2024, is on the presidential-year cycle; the next governor's race is in 2028. Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith (R) is elected on the governor's ticket, not separately, and faced no election this year.
U.S. Senator: no election this year. Sen. Todd Young's (R) seat is next contested in 2028, and Sen. Jim Banks's (R) in 2030.
Other Statewide Offices
Secretary of State: Beau Bayh (D), 1,002,925 votes, 51.8%, elected. Called by the AP. Max Engling (R) took 824,926 votes, 42.6%; Greg Ballard (Lincoln Party), 69,638 votes, 3.6%; Lauri Shillings (Libertarian), 38,501 votes, 2.0%. The incumbent, Diego Morales (R), had been eliminated at the party nominating stage.
State Treasurer: not yet called. Incumbent Daniel Elliott (R), 976,396 votes, 51.0%, leads Coumba Kebe (D), 937,320 votes, 49.0%. Elliott has declared victory himself, but the AP has not called the race; this list records the lead only.
State Comptroller (the former auditor's office): not yet called. Jessica Bailey (D), 943,717 votes, 49.1%, leads incumbent Elise Nieshalla (R), 923,187 votes, 48.0%; John Schick (Libertarian) took about 3%. Nieshalla has conceded and Bailey has declared victory, but the AP has not formally called the race; this list records the lead only. If confirmed, Bailey would be the first Democrat to win the office since 1982.
Attorney General: no election this year. Incumbent Todd Rokita (R) was reelected in 2024; the office is next contested in 2028.
The superintendent of public instruction is appointed by the governor and faces no election.
Ballot Questions
Public Question 1 (constitutional amendment, denial of bail): expand the cases in which bail may be denied — a person charged with a crime other than murder or treason may be held without bail if the proof is evident or the presumption strong and the state shows by clear and convincing evidence that no release conditions can reasonably protect another person or the community. Yes 1,059,126 votes, 58.3% — passed. Called by the AP.
Public Question 2 (constitutional amendment, town court judges' residency): allow city and town court judges to live in the county where the court sits, or in the nearest adjoining county. Yes 1,138,088 votes, 62.6% — passed. Called by the AP.
Those were the ballot's two statewide questions; a local casino referendum in three northeastern counties is a county matter and is not part of this section.
U.S. House
Overview: all nine seats were up and all nine have been called. Republicans held seven seats to the Democrats' two before the election; afterwards they hold six to three, a net Democratic gain of one.
District 1: Frank Mrvan (D, incumbent), 142,213 votes, 63.0%, reelected over Barb Regnitz (R), 83,468 votes, 37.0%.
District 2: Rudy Yakym (R, incumbent), 99,148 votes, 51.3%, reelected over Jamee Decio (D), 89,173 votes, 46.1%.
District 3: Marlin Stutzman (R, incumbent), 109,692 votes, 54.9%, reelected over Kelly Thompson (D), 90,180 votes, 45.1%.
District 4: Jim Baird (R, incumbent), 112,408 votes, 54.2%, reelected over Drew Cox (D), 95,115 votes, 45.8%.
District 5: J.D. Ford (D), 134,476 votes, 51.7%, defeated incumbent Victoria Spartz (R), 125,851 votes, 48.3% — a flip. Ford is the first openly LGBTQ member of Congress elected from Indiana, and Democrats won District 5 for the first time since the 1990s.
District 6: Jefferson Shreve (R, incumbent), 111,022 votes, 55.1%, reelected over Cynthia Wirth (D), 90,439 votes, 44.9%.
District 7: André Carson (D, incumbent), 157,368 votes, 77.1%, reelected over Patrick McAuley (R), 41,360 votes, 20.3%.
District 8: Mark Messmer (R, incumbent), 117,503 votes, 55.2%, reelected over Mary Allen (D), 95,206 votes, 44.8%.
District 9: Erin Houchin (R, incumbent), 122,326 votes, 54.0%, reelected over Brad Meyer (D), 98,480 votes, 43.5%.
Chinese American / Asian American winners: none among the nine House winners.
State Legislature
State Senate: half of the 50 seats were up. Republicans kept control; Democrats gained at least four seats, including Natasha Baker's defeat of incumbent Ron Alting in District 22 and Julie McGill's defeat of incumbent Liz Brown in District 15, with the final count undecided. In District 29, Democrat Kristina Moorhead held the seat vacated by J.D. Ford's run for Congress with about 62%.
State House: all 100 seats were up. Republicans held 70 seats to 30 before the election, with a two-thirds supermajority. Republicans kept the majority, but Democrats flipped at least five seats and Republicans can no longer reach the 67-seat threshold — their 14-year supermajority has ended. At the time of compilation the AP had called 51 seats for Republicans and 43 for Democrats, with six uncalled and Democrats leading in three of them; the final count is undecided.
Notable state House defeat: Speaker Todd Huston (R, District 37) lost to Democrat Lauren Cole by about 48.5% to 51.5%.
Counting and Certification
All figures are from the Indiana Secretary of State's official count and AP calls as of the morning of November 4, with about 95% of votes counted. The treasurer's and comptroller's races and the legislature's final seat counts await calls; the official statewide turnout figure had not been published at the time of compilation. All results are unofficial until state certification. GSM will update this list as the remaining races are called.
