Governor and U.S. Senator

Michigan voted in the 2026 midterm elections on November 3. The results below are the collective choice of the state's voters. According to the Michigan Secretary of State's official count and Associated Press race calls, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson was elected governor with 54.53%, and Abdul El-Sayed was elected to the U.S. Senate with 52.51% and will become the first Muslim U.S. senator. All 13 U.S. House seats have been called, with Democrats flipping the delegation to 9 seats against 4. Democrats also retook the state House, forming a Democratic trifecta for the first time since 2022.

Governor: Jocelyn Benson (D), 2,600,299 votes, 54.53%, elected. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer was term-limited; the open seat was held by Democrats before and after. Called by the AP.

Governor, other candidate: John James (R), 2,086,600 votes, 43.76%. Winnie Brinks (D) was elected lieutenant governor on Benson's ticket.

U.S. Senator: Abdul El-Sayed (D), 2,507,286 votes, 52.51%, elected. Sen. Gary Peters retired; the open seat was a Democratic hold. Called by the AP. El-Sayed will become the first Muslim member of the U.S. Senate.

U.S. Senate, other candidate: Mike Rogers (R), 2,172,141 votes, 45.49%. The state's other senator, Elissa Slotkin (D), was not up this year; her seat is next contested in 2030.

Other Statewide Offices

Attorney General: Eli Savit (D), elected, succeeding Dana Nessel, who was term-limited. The AP called the race in the early hours of November 4 ET; exact vote totals await the Secretary of State's official count.

Secretary of State: Garlin Gilchrist (D, the sitting lieutenant governor), 2,536,984 votes, 53.75%, elected. Anthony Forlini (R) took 2,056,763 votes, 43.57%.

The state treasurer and the superintendent of public instruction are appointed offices, not elected: the treasurer is appointed by the governor and the superintendent by the State Board of Education.

State Board of Education (two seats up, elected statewide): Judith Pritchett (D), 2,362,870 votes, and Tiffany Tilley (D), 2,337,518 votes, both elected. Called by the AP.

State Supreme Court (two seats up): incumbent justices Megan Cavanagh and Noah Hood were reelected; both were Democratic nominees.

With the governorship and both chambers in Democratic hands, Michigan has a Democratic trifecta for the first time since 2022.

Counting and Certification

All figures are from the Michigan Secretary of State's official count and AP calls as of the morning of November 4. The attorney general's exact vote totals, district-level figures for the two Supreme Court seats, and the state House's final seat count await the official tally. All results are unofficial until the county canvasses and certification by the Board of State Canvassers in late November. GSM will update this list around certification.
