Hawkins Edges Kansas Insurance Commissioner Race by 19,115 Votes as Sykes Concedes

The Kansas insurance commissioner race came into focus on November 4: Republican Dan Hawkins, speaker of the Kansas House, leads Democrat Dinah Sykes, the state Senate minority leader, with about 49% of the vote to her 47%. Semi-official tallies from the Kansas Secretary of State's office put Hawkins at 528,004 votes and Sykes at 508,889, a margin of 19,115 votes - the same figures recorded in GSM's Kansas statewide results roundup. Sykes, who led during advance voting before Hawkins overtook her, has conceded; Hawkins said in a victory email that he was truly humbled and has already begun transition meetings. He will succeed Vicki Schmidt as insurance commissioner. Libertarian Ric Koehn took about 4%.

Other statewide results the same day: Republican Steven Johnson won reelection as state treasurer after his Democratic opponent, Juan Luengo, conceded, and Republican Derek Schmidt won reelection to the U.S. House in the 2nd Congressional District, which includes Topeka. The governor's race remains undecided as counting continues.

The insurance commissioner regulates Kansas's insurance market and consumer protections. The race was among the closest statewide contests of the midterms. All figures are unofficial pending state certification.
