Mullock Upsets Van Drew as New Jersey's 2nd District Flips

CNN and Decision Desk HQ called New Jersey's 2nd Congressional District on November 4 for Democrat Zack Mullock. As of 2 p.m. Wednesday, Mullock had 135,445 votes to Republican incumbent Rep. Jeff Van Drew's 129,028. Van Drew confirmed on stage at his campaign event in Sea Isle City, shortly after 10 p.m. on November 3, that he had called Mullock to concede.

Mullock, the mayor of Cape May, challenged Van Drew in a South Jersey district long considered a Republican stronghold. Van Drew has been one of President Donald Trump's most stalwart supporters for years and received Trump's endorsement on October 22, but that was not enough to spark sufficient Republican turnout. Mullock said in a statement on election night that the victory belonged to the district's voters.

The 2nd District comprises Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland and Salem counties, along with parts of Gloucester and Ocean counties. With Mullock and District 7 Democrat Rebecca Bennett both flipping Republican seats, Rep. Chris Smith, who has served since 1981, is now the lone Republican in New Jersey's congressional delegation.
